How to Start a Lawn Care Business

Have you ever worked for someone else and thought that you could run their business better than them? Have you ever thought of proving you can do it by starting your own lawn care business?

If you find yourself thinking these thoughts, you are definitely a small business owner in the making. Believe it or not – most people don’t think this way. They would rather just put their time in, do what the boss says, collect their paycheck, and go home. You are a unique breed. You have the entrepreneurial spirit!

So why haven’t you taken that first step?  Why not get off the employee treadmill and start the lifestyle of a small business owner? Here are a few of the typical excuses I hear time and time again:

  • It’s too risky!
  • I don’t have enough money!
  • What if I fail?
  • What if I can’t get customers?
  • I don’t know enough about business!

The list goes on and on, but all of these excuses can easily be overcome and I will show you how.

But first, please think about this:  EVERY successful business owner has the same single quality that is needed for success. The secret to their success lies in the following quote from Harvey MacKay, the famous business motivational speaker:

“Find something you love to do and you’ll never have to work another day in your life!”

Harvey is saying that if you have a passion for something, you will never feel like you are working. If you love what you are doing, you will want to get up in the morning and do what you love to do!  It’s not “work” if you love doing it!

  • Do you have a passion for lawn care?
  • Do you like being outdoors?
  • Do you have pride in the lawns you maintain?
  • Do you want to be your own boss?

If you answer to these questions is not an emphatic “YES!”  -  you should probably stop reading and go back to working for someone else, as the odds of you becoming a successful lawn care business owner are against you.

But if you did say “Yes!”  - you are well on your way to becoming a successful lawn care business owner. To succeed, you will only need to call on your determination to find that necessary knowledge that you currently lack. It’s the love of what you do that will drive you to success.

When you approach a new customer about maintaining their lawn, your passion for lawn care will show though and they will be happy to work with you. People love to be around enthusiastic, positive people who love what they are doing!

So if you have the required passion, then how do you find the knowledge  – the tips and tricks you need to become successful?

The easiest way to uncover this knowledge is to find a mentor. You know – a guy who has been in the business for years that will give you all the tips you need to avoid the growing pains of running your own business.

It would be great if there was an expert available to each of us to answer all of our questions. But if you know someone that fits this description, he’s probably running the lawn care business down the street that you are about to be competing against.

So how do you find a mentor?

Enter a 30 year lawn care pro, Jeff Marshall. Jeff has worked in the lawn care business for over 30 years. During that time, he has worked for, managed, and owned landscape businesses. He has done and seen it all.

Over the years, Jeff has shown many of his employees how to succeed in their own lawn care business.

As Jeff says, “Some of my long time employees become my friends. Why wouldn’t I want them to succeed? There is more than enough work for everyone – at least for those that know what they are doing!”

Jeff was taught his craft by the best and he believes it is his duty to pass this knowledge on to the next generation of lawn care business pros.

Many of Jeff’s students have told him how great a mentor he is and often tell him he should write a book. Well he finally has!  The book has the straight forward title “How to Start a Successful Lawn Care Business”

Jeff has put all of his lawn care business tips and tricks into this book.  The book is over 100 pages and it is written in an easy to read, straight forward, no BS style. You will have at your finger tips all the information you need to start your own lawn care business.

In his book, Jeff starts at step one and takes you through all the necessary steps to becoming a successful lawn care business owner! Nothing is left out!

Remember, as Jeff always says:

“Do what you love and the green will follow!”
